Dental implants
Serving patients throughout Didsbury, Heatons, Withington and Cheadle
Dental implant treatment can help restore missing teeth and improve both the appearance and function of your smile. Whether you are replacing a single tooth or several teeth, implants provide a stable way to support replacement teeth designed to look and function similarly to natural teeth.
In addition to improving the appearance of your smile, replacing missing teeth may also help support your long-term oral health. When teeth are missing, the surrounding bone can gradually change over time and neighbouring teeth may shift. Implant treatment can help provide support for replacement teeth and maintain overall dental function.
At The Dental Health Centre, we provide dental implant treatment for a wide range of cases, from straightforward single tooth replacement to more complex restorations. Our patients benefit from modern technology and the experience of our implant dentist, Tom Sephton, who will guide you through the treatment options available.
Introducing Digital Dentistry
At The Dental Health Practice, we aim to use modern dental technology to help provide efficient, precise and comfortable treatment for our patients.
Digital scanning technology allows us to capture highly detailed images of your teeth, which can be viewed on screen in real time.
Our 3D scanning system also offers a comfortable alternative to traditional dental impressions, meaning in many cases we can avoid the use of dental putty. The process is quick and minimally invasive, allowing you to breathe and swallow normally, and pause if needed during the scan.
What is a dental implant?
Put simply, a dental implant is a small titanium post placed in the jawbone to replace the root of a missing tooth. Over time, the implant can integrate with the surrounding bone, helping to provide support for replacement teeth.
Once the implant has healed, which typically takes around 3–6 months, it can be used to support a crown, bridge or denture to replace missing teeth.
These replacement teeth are carefully designed to blend with your existing teeth and help restore the appearance and function of your smile.
Types of implants
- Single implant – implants can be used to replaces a single tooth, restoring your smile with a single implant and crown.
- Multiple implants – if you have a gap from a few missing teeth, dental implants can be placed to securely fix a dental bridge in place.
- Full smile restorations – If you are missing a full arch of teeth, or the full set, 4 to 8 implants can be placed to securely attach a denture. Anchoring dentures on dental implants ensure that they do not slip and are comfortable.
Why choose dental implants?
Crowns, bridges and dentures can be effective ways to replace missing teeth and restore the appearance and function of your smile. However, some traditional options may not fully address changes that can occur in the jawbone over time when teeth are missing.
In some cases, treatments such as bridges may involve preparing neighbouring teeth to support the restoration. Dentures may also require adjustments over time as the mouth naturally changes.
Dental implants provide an alternative approach by replacing the root of a missing tooth and supporting replacement teeth without relying on adjacent teeth. Implants can also help stimulate the jawbone in a similar way to natural tooth roots, which may help maintain bone levels.
The benefits of implants
Natural appearance and function – Dental implants are designed to support replacement teeth that look and function similarly to natural teeth.
Stable support – Implants are placed in the jawbone to help provide a stable foundation for replacement teeth.
Long-term solution – With good oral hygiene and regular dental care, implants can provide a long-lasting option for replacing missing teeth.
Supports jawbone health – Implants can help stimulate the jawbone in a similar way to natural tooth roots, which may help maintain bone levels after tooth loss.
Are you suitable for treatment?
To be considered for dental implant treatment, patients generally need healthy gums and sufficient jawbone to support the implant. During your initial consultation, Tom Sephton will assess your oral health using X-rays and scans to determine whether implant treatment may be suitable and whether any preparatory treatment is required.
In some cases, patients may be advised to see a hygienist before treatment begins to help ensure their gums are healthy. Tom will also assess the amount and quality of bone available to support an implant.
If there is not enough bone in the area, additional procedures may be recommended before implant placement. These can include treatments such as bone grafting, bone expansion or sinus lift procedures, depending on your individual needs.
